This is mainly because MQP and internship. Now that I have passed in all the necessary paperwork I'm just waiting... waiting for that call that will explain my poisition to me... the one that will tell me how much I will be making over the summer.

As for MQP, I'm just waiting... waiting for the secretary to email me back with an appointment time with my advisor!! I realize she must be super busy and everything but I have sent, and re sent her same emails three times already!! gahhHh.. I don't think I like the waiting game. It makes me anxious to not know what I'm going to be doing.

Anyways, thats my story for now. What are you all upto? Waiting for anything? If you are and know how to make this waiting period not seem so terrible please be sure to comment and help me out :-D That would be wonderful.

Well there's a long weekend coming up. I'm sure gonna make the best of it. Hope you all have a great weekend too! Next week is a short one =D YAY.BioPreMed Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14984776963168717516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3936412145609299255.post-4126020156005156992010-04-09T11:51:00.000-07:002010-04-09T11:57:20.780-07:00Decision made!I have finally made a decision! I know I knowww all of you are DYINGGG to know what it isss ;o) so I will no longer keep you in suspense.

I chose......... Hospital..................................................... Y.

My reasons? Welll I really liked the idea of being able to network in a new environment. Also, I liked the opportunity of exploring a new field, hence learning new things. I also decided to go with Hospital Y because maybe there I will be able to find out what other doctors did when they took years off. This way I will have an idea of what to do which will be very helpful you know?

As for MQP, I'm still trying to hash that out with my advisor.. no luck so far though :-/... Hopefully something works out.

Anyways, that's all the update I have for you guys for now soo I'll update back next time!BioPreMed Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14984776963168717516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3936412145609299255.post-35477844473349581292010-04-01T11:18:00.000-07:002010-04-01T11:23:17.896-07:00The latest...Alright, soo lately I have been extremely confused as to what to do with my summer. There are quite a few options and its driving me nuts...

Option # 1: Go back to work where I worked last summer (Hospital X)
Pros - Pay will be higher, familiar people
Cons- Nothing new to learn.

Option #2: Go work at a new place, Hopital Y
Pros - New people to meet (more networking options), new material to learn.
Cons - Lower pay.

Option # 3: Work at a biotech company
Pros- A lot higher pay than my other two options, new experience (since I've never worked at one before), new people, maybe it would open up more options for a career.
Cons - doesn't add to experience for med school

Option # 4: MQP
Pros- I will get it out of the way and my senior year won't be as hectic
Cons - No $$

So... what should I do?BioPreMed Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14984776963168717516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3936412145609299255.post-26339834822121148972010-03-24T10:13:00.000-07:002010-03-24T10:19:37.903-07:00Bio Fair tomorrow!Hey to all of you Bio students,

If you don't already know tomorrow is the Biotechnology and Bioengineering Career Fair. So, for those of you who did not have much success in finding companies last Career Fair go to this one!

I'm sure by now all of you already know this, but all you have to do is dress professionally, bring multiple copies of your resume and bring your ID card. If you need suggestions on what to wear to this event, go watch our "What to Wear to a Career Fair Video" at the CDC website. It has a lot of helpful tips that you may want to consider while choosing an outfit.

Good luck for tomorrow, and hope to see you there!BioPreMed Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14984776963168717516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3936412145609299255.post-43858068457129421842010-03-02T10:27:00.000-08:002010-03-02T10:30:43.087-08:00In the homestretchHey guys,

I know its crunch time since it's finals week and everything so I am going to make this super short. Basically I just wanna say good luck to you all in surviving this hectic week. Break is only 4 more days away!! =D Study hardcore for these last few days and then enjoy the break. It will be sweet. Over the break though do attempt to keep up with internship things, such as emailing contacts and what not, cuz as we all know once school's in session its really hard to focus on other things besides the classes we take.

:o)

See you all in D-term!BioPreMed Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14984776963168717516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3936412145609299255.post-34868866458880295652010-02-19T10:45:00.001-08:002010-02-22T11:55:22.190-08:00The aftermath...So, the Career Fair was last Thursday and WOW it was crowded. A lot of students came. Everyone was impressed by the new swipy card thing that the CDC had going on there. It was great! It saved so much time. It was indeed a successful event.

I was among the people in the crowd with my newly updated resume =o] I managed to make a stop and give my resume to the four companies I had my eye on. The employers I encountered were very nice and most of them were very helpful. Granted there weren't really any bio positions available at this time (even for the bio companies that were there) the employers stressed on the fact that postings should be regularly checked regarding job positions. Also, emailing them regarding the positions available will be extremely helpful. This way you won't be forgotten!

So, my goal to accomplish by this coming weekend is to have emailed all the employers I spoke with. It's just going to be a thank you email with a bit of a follow up inquiry. Lets see what happens in the next few months..BioPreMed Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14984776963168717516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3936412145609299255.post-88674086632394540812010-02-17T22:28:00.001-08:002010-02-17T22:46:22.104-08:00Take a chance... what do you have to lose?Hey to all you late night people who are up right now making those final changes on the resume. I am currently doing the same with mine, so no worries because you are definitely not the only one. So I have been checking on JobFinder to check on how many, and which companies are coming on campus tomorrow, and believe it or not.. there are 109! Yeahh I know... most of them are for engineers. In fact all of them, except for TWO, are coming for other majors besides Biology.

Now you are most likely wondering why I am still bothering to fix up my resume. Well, honestly, I look at it this way... even though there are only two Bio companies coming they are still two options as opposed to no option. So if I want to make myself an option for them I should go the Career Fair, that is being held tomorrow from 1pm to 5pm at Harrington Auditorium. It can't hurt. Can it? Also, if I'm the only biology major who shows up to this Bio company with my resume in hand wouldn't I have a good chance of getting a shot at an internship with them? I like to think so ;)

So yes there are ONLY two companies coming tomorrow, and yes, there is another career fair JUST for science majors, but I think it's worth it to give it a shot. Plus, look at it this way, this Summer Internship & Job Fair can be a practice run for all you bio majors out thereee. When its time for Science Career Fair, you all will be experts on how to present yourself to the employer you want to get hired by!
BioPreMed Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14984776963168717516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3936412145609299255.post-67900236179724107902010-02-16T10:44:00.000-08:002010-02-16T10:50:13.938-08:00Opportunities and options. So, last week I received an email that Genzyme is looking to hire students of different majors, including Bio & Biotechnology. Now, granted I have no idea of what I want to do for the summer, I decided to go for this opportunity and apply. The deadline was February 15, so I just made the deadline =D

Now, if I do get an interview and somehow do get this job, what will I do? I'm confused with my options because even though I know I do not want to go to Med School right away, I still want to do something that pertains to that field, and will help me with my personal statement and resume later on. My options for the summer right now are...

- work at a bio company
- work in a lab at Brighams and Womens
- Shadow a doctor for the entire summer...
- volunteer some place and not have an internship..

What do I do?!???BioPreMed Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14984776963168717516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3936412145609299255.post-40417876193709193602010-02-09T10:32:00.000-08:002010-02-09T10:46:22.158-08:00Procastination = bad habit!Putting of important things, such as looking for an MQP, is a very bad habit. It's the type of bad habit that once you have it.. its really hard to shake off. Junior year is almost coming to an end, and if I want to get a good project and be done with it in the first half of senior year.. I should be looking right now.

I guess the thing that makes me not want to do so is.. I don't know where to start really. I want an MQP that would add to my resume for Med School. I have looked around online and have failed to find anything. The next step to take would be talk to the pre-health advisor, Jill Rulfs, and see if she has anything. I usually like to figure things out on my own and try not to go to people for help unless and until its my last option. That's another reason why I haven't been on top of things about MQP lately.. heh...

Anyways, I will definitely get going on this MQP hunt. Hopefully I will have good news about it next week!

Wish me luckkkk!! :o]BioPreMed Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14984776963168717516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3936412145609299255.post-59506170663556910012010-02-02T10:43:00.000-08:002010-02-02T11:00:18.299-08:00What's going on?Hey everyone,

What have you all been upto? Did anyone take the practice MCAT or GRE test that was being offered this past weekend? How did it go? I think the MCAT tests are really mentally draining. It's pretty much awful. It did, however, give me a good idea of how brutal the test can be.

Other than the practice MCAT test, I have been thinking about my future a lot lately. Recently, I have been having second thoughts about applying for Med School right after undergraduate. I have been considering taking a year off maybe. Even though I may not be sure about what I would like to do after WPI, I do know one thing.. and that is Med School is no joke. You have to be a 100% sure about it because if you don't love it and aren't looking forward to it then it's not going to be easy. Its a HUGE time and financial committment. Anyways, I'm just thinking about my options if I do not apply. Maybe I'll work for a year or two. Or... maybe I'll find something to do in that year which will look amazing on my med school resume.. I don't know yet, but I'm happy to know I have plenty of options, and even though Med School may not be in my immediate future... it definitely will be somewhere down the road.

So in the meantime I just keep my mind and eyes open for any possiblity. =o)BioPreMed Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14984776963168717516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3936412145609299255.post-66873981489542645672010-01-21T11:31:00.000-08:002010-01-21T11:40:22.614-08:00Something I should be doing......is editing my resume. The Career Fair is coming up on Feb 18th, and there are many new things that I have accomplished since fall of '09 that need to go in my already stuffed resume. You see, updating the resume would not be a hard task if the page limit was not 1. Now that I am approaching my senior year there are a ton of things that can be put in, however, there is no space for all of it. So... here is where deciding what is best to put in becomes an issue.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets annoyed by that and has trouble deciding so here's something helpful: go to the CDC. Or you can also go to the Resume Writing workshops that are being held on the following days:

Jan 21 (today) at 6 PM in SL 115
Jan 25th at 4 Pm in HL 116.

Believe me when I say this, it will make things much easier and faster. :o]BioPreMed Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14984776963168717516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3936412145609299255.post-54884653903803024382010-01-14T10:18:00.000-08:002010-01-15T11:18:22.955-08:00And I'm BACKKK!Hey everyone!

Guess who is back from IQP?? ME. IQP abroad was an phenomenal experience. I had so many first time experiences that I would not had if I had not gone out of the country. It was simply AMAZING. For those of you who got into their choice of IQP site, congrats. For those who are not going abroad for whatever reason, my advice? DO IT. It's a wonderful experience. If not IQP then go abroad for MQP =o) It will be so worth it.

Well that is all for now. Once C-term gets rolling I'll be back with a bunch of new information for all of you. Hope you all enjoyed the break and are ready for an awesome term ahead.

See ya!BioPreMed Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14984776963168717516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3936412145609299255.post-2326328828589430252009-10-14T12:32:00.001-07:002009-10-20T19:18:37.117-07:00Done with A term!Hello all,

I just wanted to drop in and say best of luck for finals. The past week has been really hectic for me and for everyone else also I am sure. Every classroom I sit in, I notice atleast dozen people coughing and sniffling. This can only confirm that finals are here. We only have one more day to get through people, then we can rest peacefully for 10 days before we have to look at any books or assignments again!

I on the other hand will not be returning in 10 days. My time to go abroad for IQP has finally arrived :o):o):o) So I will be logging on again with a ton of information for you guys next year!

Hope you all enjoy your break and do well in the finals.

See ya!BioPreMed Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14984776963168717516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3936412145609299255.post-51610058579960821272009-10-05T09:28:00.001-07:002010-01-14T10:45:52.210-08:00End of the term is approaching fastHey folks,

Sorry I have not updated in the longest time. I know you all have missed my blogs so muchhh. hehe. So lately I have been really caught up in all the end of the term stress that accumulates here at WPI. I'm sure you ALL are well aware of this. The papers, the tests, the all nighters and other stressful things have had a huge impact on my immune system. I am sick, hence the delay in blogging. Sorry guys.

Being sick really stinks =o(. You wanna know why? Well it's mainly because being sick is exhausting. Literally all I want to do is sleep all the time. Sleep and eat and sleep, but ofcourse there just is no room for THAT at this schoool. Nooo wayy. I hate having my life being in shambles. I hate falling behind and then playing the catch up game, which is neverending (wellll i guess it ends once the term ends).

So last week I was going to blog about going to the "How to write a cover letter" workshop. Let mee tell youu there is sooo much more to writing a cover letter than I had imagined. The workshop, run excellently by Maggie, was extremely informative. IF any of you missed the workshop, but wanted to learn how to write a GOOD cover letter, no worries there are a couple of options for you. These are:

1) You can come to the CDC to make an appointment and a counselor can help you out.
2) There are handouts with instructions and sample cover letters on them

I had to write a cover letter once last year for a Biotech company that I was applying to. If you are one of those people who have NEVER written a cover letter then let me tell you... it really is not that easy. It's something you, along with many others, will hate doing but unfortunately it has to be done. My problem was that I didn't even know how to begin. I mean I knew I should start it off by introducing myself but where do I go from there? The one HUGE mistake I made in that cover letter was that I summarized what was already in my resume. That's NOT what a cover letter should be. The employers can see what your resume consists of , and there is ABSOLUTELY NO NEED to sum it up in the cover letter. Instead, you write about things that aren't in your resume, but will help make you a stronger candidate. This can be achieved by doing research about the company you intend on applying to and proving to them how you meet the standards and qualities that company X is looking for in their intern. Anyways, dont worry there will be a whole blog on writing a cover letter later. So keep an eye out for that post, if you're interested.

I'm curious, did anyone go to the practice MCAT or GRE tests that were being held this weekend? I had signed up for the MCAT practice test, but ofcourse did not make it :0(. Oh well, good thing I have taken many of those already so I know what to expect. Those of you who are interested in going to Med school, please make sure you take one of those practice tests. Its a really good way of gauging what you need to not worry about, what area you need sever help in and how it feels to take a 5.5 hour test. If you can't tell... its EXHAUSTING. It's mentally draining if you're not prepared for it. My advice to the people planning on taking the MCAT test is to prepare well, know all the background material, and take as many practice tests as you can. Taking these practice tests will help you build your endurance for the 5.5 hour test day. If you have any questions, concerns or comments regarding this matter leave me a comment OR you can come to the CDC orr even better contact Jill Rulfs. She is the pre-health advisor.

Okay so this post is pretty long. I guess it makes up for all the days I didn't post up anything huh? Anyways, I hope you all are doing much better than me handling the stress and the change of weather. We only have about two more weeks to go so HANG ON!BioPreMed Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14984776963168717516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3936412145609299255.post-55318797310526888962009-09-22T12:21:00.000-07:002009-09-22T12:27:20.856-07:00Career Fair is TomorrowwwPromiseeee this won't be a long post. I just quickly want to brush up on some stuff for tomorrow. For those of you who don't know the Career Fair is in the Harrington Auditorium from 1pm - 5pm. Make sure to bring your ID's along with several copies of your most recently critiqued resume. Before you come to the fair log onto your JobFinder account and check out which companies are going to be coming. This way you'll be aware of which companies, out of the 107 that are going to be there, pertain to your interest. Lastly, make sure to dress nicely. First impressions always count !

Good luck tomorrow.BioPreMed Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14984776963168717516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3936412145609299255.post-25390003812512246762009-09-18T08:02:00.000-07:002009-09-22T12:20:59.970-07:00Shopping!!So who doesn't like shopping for new clothes? Over the weekend I went on a huuugee shopping spree (just for the Career Fair ofcourse ;-P). On Saturday as I was looking over my resume one last time to see if there's any more polishing left to do it occurred to me that I don't have anything to wear for the Career Fair. I had two options: 1) I could borrow something from someone or (2) I could just go buy myself an outfit. I chose the latter and it was wonderful =D. Now don't get me wrong... not everyone has to go shopping just for the career fair, its completely okay to borrow something from a friend to save money. I just love shopping and any excuse I can get to shop... I do :).

The result of my shopping spree was that I purchased a nice skirt, a very cute sweater and a button up shirt to go under it. The weather these days is sort of unpredictable so if it's chilly outside I will definitely be wearing a sweater, if not then just the button up shirt and skirt. OH do not forget ladies wear some nylon tights/ pantyhose. It's not very professional to show bare skin. ALSOOO make sure whatever top you choose to wear.. it's appropriate. None of those low cut wacky shirts... uh uhh.. definitely NOT acceptable. Also refrain from too much make up, perfume or jewelry. You want to look sweet and simple as well as professional.

Guys, if you're confused on what to wear here are some tips for you as well. There's definitely no need to go over the top with a suit. A nice button up shirt with dress pants and polished shoes would do wonders. If its chilly, a nice sweater vest over the shirt or a blazer would do the trick as well. Luckily... you guys don't have to worry too much about showing skin, or wearing too much perfume, but those of you who do wear jewelry make sure you keep it to a minimum. After all, you have to admit... can't really look too professional with chains and all.

Since the Career Fair is only 2 days away and if you do not have any clothes for this event I suggest you either go shopping todayy or borrow something from someone. Even if you do go shopping for clothes it doesn't necessarily have to be from some expensive place. TJ Max or any other stores with good bargain would do. Let's face it... at this point in our lives we don't really have to wear these clothes daily sooo might as well not spend too much for just a few occasions right?

Oh.. one last thing before I leave, make sure you go on your JobFinder Account and check out which companies are coming to the Career Fair. There are 107 companies that are going to be there so my advice to you would be to see which ones relate to your major, or the career that you want to try out. This way you can be efficient by weeding out the companies that you are not interested in and going straight to the ones that you are :) Having an account on JobFinder is EXTREMELY helpful. THose of you have it.. props to youu, and those of you who don't... wellll you're definitely missing out and you should get one ASAP! It's really easy to set up an account. All you have to know is your id number and your birthday. You will need your id number for the Username. For the password, you type in the last four digits of your id number and then the month and the date of your birthday. Once you log in, fill out your profile, upload your resume, and then begin looking at the companies that are going to be coming to the Career Fair by going to the events tab and clicking on the Career Fair.

I know this was ALOT of information, but it's important so take in everything bit by bit and you'll be just fine :)

Hope to see ya at the Career Fair in Harrington Auditorium!BioPreMed Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14984776963168717516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3936412145609299255.post-28659200708836644442009-09-16T13:58:00.000-07:002009-09-16T14:46:53.539-07:00IQP requires a RESUME people!!!!So at the Global Fair yesterday it was quite apparent to me that MANY of you think that you don't need a resume to go abroad. Well lemme tell ya somethinnnn if you want to go abroad to do your IQP, newsflash you're not the ONLY one interested in that. The application process to get into one of these programs have been getting more competitive with each passing year. So if you want to get your top choice having the BEST resume that you can have is only going to help your chances.

Yes, some of you might not be going to the career fair (bad idea!!) but that does not mean that getting your resume critiqued is not going to be helpful. If you have not gotten your resume critiqued yet GO TO RESUMAZING!!! Its happening tomorrow at the ODEUM from 1pm to 7pm. It really will be extremely helpful especially since the people critiquing your resume are professionals and recruiters from companies. What can be better than being told by recuriters what they want to see in a resume? Can you think of anything? I can't.

So bottom line... make use of RESUMAZING and get your resume critiqued. If you are planning on going to the Career Fair, getting your resume critiqued now would be like killing two birds with one stone! You'll be all set for the Career Fair AND your IQP application :) :)

Hope you all make use of this opportunity!!BioPreMed Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14984776963168717516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3936412145609299255.post-41078307712389536152009-09-15T12:18:00.000-07:002009-09-15T12:37:14.522-07:00Resume Resume Resume!!!!Sooo I've been really busy lately, but in the back of my head the nagging thought of getting my resume critique has been bothering me. In order to do something about it I finally found my resume and made an appointment with one of the counselors here. There's sooooo much stuff to add to it from the summer internship at Brigham and Womens, its unbelievable.

The appointment was extremely helpful. It helped me organize the things on my resume better. Good thing I got my resume critiqued. It would have been really overwhelming to do it all by myself. I have a follow up resume critquing appointment coming up soon, which is perfect. It will help me finalize the set up of my resume before the Career Fair, which by the way is only a week away!!!! So for those of you who STILL have not gotten your resume critiqued, I HIGHLY suggest you get that done ASAP. This can be done by going to the CDC during walk in hours which are on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1-3, orrrr you can try making an appointment with 0ne of the counselors. I'm not exactly sure how many more available spots there are left anymore, but it doesn't hurt to try. Lastly, if all else fails, go to RESUMAZING which is on September 17th!

Trust me, getting your resume critiqued is EXTREMELY helpful, so go do it!BioPreMed Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14984776963168717516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3936412145609299255.post-33895500103826709462009-09-02T19:33:00.000-07:002009-10-20T19:17:05.000-07:00Junior YearWow... it has only been a week back at WPI as a junior and already I am heavily swamped with work. There's always some assignment waiting to be completed from 8am to 12 pm. All these assignments have snapped me back to the harsh reality that summer really is over. Looking back at it I have to admit that it flew by. It's amazing how just four months ago it was the 1st of May and I was thinking to myself "four months is such a long time", but once my summer internship started, when the day began and when it ended just became a meshed memory.

I loved my summer. It was fun and very productive. My internship began in the month of June, so for the entire month of May I made it a point to travel and have as much as I possibly could before I would have to succumb to the 9-5 schedule of the real world. I interned at the immunohistochemistry lab at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. I enjoyed that ALOT. It gave me many insights to the life of pathologists, and how everything is accomplished in the hospital. It also helped me develop relationships and make great connections which I am extremely happy about. If you're a pre-med student it is terrific to make connections with doctors. It really helps for future recommendations and all that good stuff.

As for my current status, I am not a huge fan. Gone are the days where there was time to relax. Now its constant work and no time to just snuggle up on the couch and watch a good movie. I do have to admit that most of the stress stems from PQP and ID 2050, but I bet all the work that I am doing in the U.S. right now will pay off. It will definitely be worth it. I absolutely can not wait for A term to be over so I can start packing for my 2 month long stay abroad :o]BioPreMed Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14984776963168717516noreply@blogger.com0
